Memories & Heirlooms Workshop

  • South Bank Studios 97 Bishopthorpe Road York, England, YO23 1NX United Kingdom (map)

Join resident artist Jo Yeates for a very special workshop, creating a truly personal piece of textile art.

This workshop gives you the opportunity to design and create your very own textile artwork using family photos, old letters or other family documents, and vintage fabrics. Very often, those family photos and Granny’s old table cloths and doilies are packed away in a cupboard, rarely seen.   You will use your hands and your memories to breathe new life in to these items, and take home a unique piece of artwork.

Don’t worry, you don’t have to cut up your original photos and documents!  A week or two before the workshop, you will email Jo the images you would like to use - photos, a letter, one of Granny's handwritten recipes, etc. She will then print them on to fabric and bring them along to the workshop. You will then build up a fabric collage using those images as your starting point. (Though, if you would like to use the originals, that would make an interesting mixed media piece.)

You will build up your fabric collage using vintage table linens, or old clothes - it is great if you can bring your own , but Jo will also provide plenty of materials. Finally,  you will embellish your artwork with stitch and text.

Jo’s  workshops are relaxed, friendly, informal and suitable for all abilities.  Demonstrations, help and guidance will be given.

The workshop costs £50, which includes materials and equipment, plus tea. coffee and biscuits.
